Elf on the Shelf: Week 1

Our class elf arrived last week and so far so good! The kids are trying so hard to be on their best behavior! This is one of my favorite times of the year to be a teacher. The innocence of my kids warms my heart!

I was stalking Pinterest one night and found a great blog post by Maria over at Kinder-Craze and I thought to myself..."I can do that!" So, thank you Kinder-Craze for being my inspiration and getting me started this year! {click on the image to be directed to her blog}

Here's how my week went...
DAY 1: Writing Letters to Santa
We used Maria's freebie (from the pack above) to write letters to Santa to request our elf. First, we brainstormed ways we could convince Santa to send us one. As you know, I LOVE my Promethean Board so I created a flip chart page to record our ideas. My little lions did a fabulous job thinking of ways to persuade Santa! Then it was time to write our letters and send them off to the North Pole!!!

DAY 2: Our elf arrives...
Wow, Santa has super fast mail! We walked into our classroom and found a special delivery from Santa under our Christmas tree! So, we opened our gift and guess what we found...OUR ELF! I bought the Elf On the Shelf box last year at Barnes and Noble. It comes with the elf and the book.

If you've read the book, then you know you have to name your elf before it becomes magical. My lions came up with a variety of names...I'm a little OCD so I picked the top 3 and then they voted! Our elf's name this year is Jingles!

 DAY 3 & 4: Where's the Elf?
So of course the first thing the kids do when they come in now is locate the elf....even before they unpack! It's not hard to get them back on track though, all you have to say is "The elf is watching you so you need to unpack and get your day started." We found our elf in our Christmas tree on day 3 and the kids have decided that he feels safe being near the tree. Then on Day 4, we found him under the tree with a surprise and a little note! My lions thought it was so funny that Jingles used my Scentos markers!

Looking for more elf ideas? I've joined Mel D's linky party over at Seusstastic Classroom Inspirations and there are LOTS of great blog posts about how other teachers are using their elves! Simply click on the image below for a direct link! Thanks for stopping by!

We are thankful for...

First of all, I'm thankful that my school system has given us the entire Thanksgiving week OFF!! Yippee...I really needed a break! Next, I'm thankful for my wonderful group of first graders and my fabulous first grade team!

Last week we read Junie B. Jones, First Grader: Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten by Barbara Parks to go along with everything Thanksgiving we did that week! If you haven't read that book, it is a MUST read. There were times when the kids and I were laughing so hard that I had to stop reading to them to catch my breath! So, to celebrate Junie B. Jones and Barbara Parks (RIP) we had pumpkin pie for our Thanksgiving treat! I had to lay some ground rules like...no spitting it in the sink if you don't like it! (read the book to get that statement)

Here are a few pictures of us enjoying our pumpkin pie!

Thank you all for being so supportive of my blog, Facebook, and Teachers Pay Teachers!  This past year has been a triumph because of you!

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Work in Progress...

In almost one week, I'll officially be a first grade teacher! Yes, I'm freaking out just a little bit! Why? Well, my room isn't finished and I haven't started planning! Of course my handy dandy notebook is full of ideas but I haven't organized them yet.

Here's a sneak peak into my little piece of teacher heaven...of course I'll be updating you as improvements are made! LOL

The BIG bulletin board on the back wall looks like this now...
If you follow me on Facebook, then you've seen me post this picture. A lot of people asked me if I had the dimensions for my word  wall and the answer is no. I used ribbon and push pins to section it off. I used push pins so I could move the lines around until it was just right. Then I stapled them into place.

More to come as I work in my room this week! Thanks for stopping by!

One of the first things I do to get ready for a new school year is to SHOP!!!! Since I'm moving up to first grade, I defiantly had to purchase some new books! Here's what I ordered....

 I've also started working a few new packs to get me started in this new first grade adventure! You can find both of these in my Teachers Pay Teachers store!!

And here's a freebie for you from my Back to School: Literacy & Math Activities pack!

Did you say Pinterest?....YES PLEASE!

Hi, my name is Nicole and I'm addicted to Pinterest! Seriously, no one has to ask me twice to join a Pinterest linky party! I think I sat on Pinterest tonight for a solid hour laughing at someone's funny board! Really...the stuff was funny!

So, I've decided to link up with Mrs. Carroll over at The First Grade Parade and share some of my most recent FAVORITE PINS! PS: I realize I'm a day late posting...that's the charm of me!
First Category....FOOD! I swear if I ever attempt to make anything I pin I will blow up to the size of a house! Good thing there's virtual food to keep my cravings down! ha.  Have you ever realized the amount of cupcakes pins there are on Pinterest? Maybe it's just me but they blow my feed up! I'm not complaining because I never would have found this....

Besides cupcakes another food I could eat all day every day is PIZZA! Who doesn't love a good dip? I could probably sit down by myself and finish this bad boy off! YUMMY!

Next Category...THINGS THAT ARE CUTE! I'm a Georgia girl and when I saw this pin I feel in love! Now, if you like this DON'T click on the link because your jaw will drop at the price! Seriously people...I could make this using an iron-on! {just saying}

My final category....SCHOOL! What did we do before Pinterest? I'm amazed at how many wonderful ideas past through my feed on  a daily basis. Here are just a few...

Open House/ Meet the Teacher Blow POPs...LOVE! I've done something similar in the past with popcorn but this just seems much easier! Thank you Mrs.Wright for this great idea/pin!

Who doesn't LOVE Pete the Cat? He has quickly become one of my favorite book characters! Isn't this door cute and simple! We're not allowed to completely cover our classroom doors so something like this would be perfect for my back to school display!

Last but not least, Jitter Juice for the first day of school! I'm going to need a gallon of this for myself on the first day! I'm already nervous about moving up to first and I still have a month before school starts! Make sure you follow this pin to it's source for more great ideas...it's Mrs. Carroll's from The First Grade Parade!

Well folks, that's all for this weeks installment of "Nicole's Favorite Pins". Tune in next week for more!!! I'm off to check out some of the other bloggers favorite pins. Thanks for stopping by!
