End of the Year Camping Activity

At the end of every year, my wonderful kindergarten team celebrates summer by having a "Round Robin" day. The kids go to each of our rooms and participate in an activity centered around summer activities. The activity in my room this year was camping. The kids came in, sit on my rug and we read Arthur Goes to Camp. Then we discuss the things we would need if we were going camping and do a simple sort on the Promethean Board. Next, I show the kids pictures on the Promethean Board and have them guess what we are going to have for our special snack. This year we made a s'more mix (mini Teddy Grahams, chocolate chips, & mini marshmallows). They loved it!

After the kids eat their snack, they are allowed to pick a tent (I have 1 large and 3 small tents set up around the room.) and read with flashlights! The rules are and don't play or you'll have to get out of the tent. The tents are a great behavior management tool! Of course, when I come around with my camera the kids get a little silly.

SPRING into Intial Sounds

This idea is not my own. I honestly don't remember where I saw this activity but I love it! To get ready for this activity, I folded a large piece of construction paper into 6 parts then I traced the creases with a black marker to make even columns for each letter in the word spring. On the day of the activity, I have the kids complete a similar beginning sound sort on the Promethean Board as a group. Then, I pair them up (after directions) and allow them to go anywhere in the room to work. This activity is a great way for the kids to display their knowledge of letters and sounds.

Valentine's Day Candy Shop

My Room Mom was full of great ideas this year! One of my favorite was our "Candy Shop" at our Valentine's Day party! She simply emailed all my parents and asked for clear containers and V'day themed candy! My parents did not disappoint! The kids each received a bag and was allowed to fill it up! Just like a candy store! Something so simple was the hit of the party!

School's OUT and I'm planning for next year...

I can't believe that another year has already gone by. I'll miss my kids but I'm already looking forward to the new personalities I'll meet in August. I've been working on some things for next year and I wanted to share them with you! Enjoy!

Countdown to First Grade Gumball Machine

Every year on the 150th day of school, I hang up our "Countdown to First Grade" gumball machine! Each day my calendar helper moves the gumballs to show how many days are left of kindergarten. It's a great way to reinforce subtraction and number recognition! The gumball machine was drawn on poster board, colored and then laminated. I used Velcro on the machine and individual gumballs. I normally use clips to hang the display from one of my pocket charts beside our Promethean Board. I have a number line on the wall below our PBoard to help students subtract.
